The Namibian tourism industry has been waiting for a proper registration system for professional tour guides since the Namibia Tourism Board came into existence in 2001. This has been delayed for numerous reasons, but an initiative was taken in late 2022 to request assistance from the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism to make it happen. This resulted in a series of workshops to confirm the necessary requirements with the tour guide fraternity, and it is expected that a register will finally be in place before the end of 2023. Once in place, this will allow professional tour guides to use their registration to facilitate work in neighbouring countries which has been challenging previously as they have had no professional registration to refer to. It will also be valuable to those looking for guides to employ when taking their guests on tours through Namibia.
